Memorial Day tends to be the unofficial start of summer. For many U.S. families, however, it is the official day to mark their loss of a loved one who fought and died for the freedoms citizens enjoy. And, a grateful nation joins them in remembering those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

The first Memorial Day was observed May 30th, 1868. Established by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, the national holiday gives people an opportunity to “cherish tenderly the memory of our heroic dead, who made their breasts a barricade between our country and its foes.”

According to the Memorial Day Foundation, more than 1 million American men and women have lost their lives in armed conflicts since July 4, 1776. The Memorial Day Foundation has calculated the cost of American Freedom and shares the number of American men and women in a number of conflicts:

  • Revolutionary War – 4,500
  • War of 1812 – 2,260
  • Mexican War – 13,283
  • Civil War – 563,621
  • Spanish-American War – 2,446
  • World War I – 116,516
  • World War II – 405,399
  • Korean War – 36,574
  • Vietnam – 58,209
  • Operation Enduring Freedom – 2,352
  • Operation Iraqi Freedom – 4,425

There will be plenty of picnics in the park, beach outings and backyard barbecues going on to kick off the unofficial start of summer.

Take a moment also to remember those who’ve lost their lives in service of the nation. On Monday, May 30th, you can join citizens across the nation participating in the National Moment of Remembrance with a moment of silence at 3pm.

Also, San Francisco area residents can participate in a Day of Honor and Remembrance at the Presidio featuring a parade, formal program, a 21-gun salute and more.

As we look to Memorial Day, our Peninsula Auto Body team would like to thank American men and women serving for protecting our freedoms. We also will remember all those who gave their lives to do so.
